Hamsterley Forest sits wedged between Teesdale and Weardale in the heart of beautiful Durham Dales, approximately 10 miles (16 km) west of Bishop Auckland. The forest is signposted off the A68, north of West Auckland.
The long-distance cycle trail ‘W2W’ (Walney Island to River Wear) passes through the forest. You can pick this trail up in Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland (via Willington) and Durham City.
The forest is not served directly by public transport services. The nearest town on a bus route is Wolsingham, five miles north of the forest entrance. The 101 bus service at Wolsingham connects with Stanhope, Crook and Bishop Auckland. Bishop Auckland has a railway station that connects with the East Coast mainline at Darlington.

Entrance from Redford Lane
Enter Hamsterley Forest and drive past the main car park & Cafe and continue along the road towards Grove Car Park, Hamsterley Forest. From here, follow the directions from Picnic Cinema signs and Crew to the Cinema and Camping site.
For this year’s Picnic Cinema we are committed to making our events as green as possible and ask you all to consider your environment and the effect your travel has on it.
Therefore we have teamed up with the friendly peeps at GoCarShare to help encourage as many of you as possible to share car journeys by offering lifts. Just click on our page and add your journey, whether you are driving or looking for a lift, and they will match you with someone going the same way.
The people you’ll be sharing your journey with are the exact same people who could be sleeping in the tent next to you and the same people you’ll be dancing with.… They’re practically already your friends – just start the fun a little earlier!
